About World Biodiversity Day
Every year May 22 is observed as the International Day for Biological Diversity (or World Biodiversity Day). This day is observed to address the biodiversity issues.
From 1993 to 2000 this day was observed on December 29, the day on which the Convention on Biological Diversity went into effect. On December 20, 2000, the date was shifted to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on May 22, 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit.
Activities and Programs on World Biodiversity Day
The celebration of the day is based on a theme chosen for that year. Many programs are conducted across the world internationally, nationally and locally. The programs conducted on this day aims to increase the understanding of the important role of biodiversity in our future. The programs include visiting a farmer market, enjoying all the different types of life your local area offers, exhibitions, seminars, movies showing environmental issues, planting trees, programs to preserve endangered species, etc.
