About Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day
Every year June 27 is observed as Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day (MSMES Day). Small scale industries are the backbone of economies of developing countries. According to International Council for Small Business (ICSB), formal and informal Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) make up over 90% of all firms and account on average for 60-70% of total employment and 50% of GDP.
On 6 April 2017, UN General Assembly decided to observe 27 June as MSME Day to raise public awareness of their contribution in sustainable development and poverty alleviation. First observation was done on 27 June 2017.
Activities and Programs on MSME Day
Member States, organizations of United Nations, international and regional organizations, civil society, NGOs are observing this day. Programs are organized to raise awareness about the contribution of these enterprises to sustainable development. There will be research presentations, policy discussions, workshops, etc. are in the observation.
Persons from MSMEs are sharing their challenges and opportunities in this field. Social media campaigns are done with hashtag #MSMEDay. The programs are there to raise awareness of the need for greater investment into small and mid-sized businesses in developing countries. The observation is also a celebration of the gigantic contribution, away from the spotlight, smaller companies make to the global economy.
