About World Radio Day

Every year February 13 is observed as World Radio Day by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This day celebrates the radio as a way of educating people, providing information, and performing freedom of expression across cultures.

13 February was the anniversary of the day the United Nations established United Nations Radio in 1946.

On 3rd November 2011 by UNESCO’s 36th General Conference proclaimed every year 13 February will be observed as Radio Day. The first observation was officially made in 2012. Radio is one of the popular ways to exchange information, provides social interchange, and educate people all over the world. This day is observed to remember the power of Radio to touch lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe.


Activities and Programs on WRD

UNESCO celebrates World Radio Day by planning activities with broadcasters, organizations and communities around the world. Seminars and discussions were conducted on this day to spread the message of the role of radio on communities.

Messages of the theme and the publicity of day’s celebration were done extensively through different interviews, public events, video messages, using social media, and websites promotion. More than 300 events were conducted on this day in more than 80 countries around the world.

In 2017 UNESCO focuses on encouraging radio stations around the world. Many programs are conducted to improve people interaction with radio and radio stations. Some radio stations allow public to participate in programming on this day. Radio Fair and Radio Forum are conducted on this day to encourage people participation.
