About International Civil Aviation Day
International Civil Aviation Day is observed to raise awareness of the importance of international civil aviation and the role that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) plays in international air transport.
ICAO is a United Nations body responsible for developing international standard for aviation safety. It was established on December 7, 1944. To mark its 50th anniversary in 1994 it established International Aviation Day. In 1996 the UN General Assembly proclaimed December 7 as International Civil Aviation Day.
