About International Day of Democracy
In democracy people determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems. This day 15 September is observed as the International Day of Democracy to raise public awareness about democracy. The observance of this day is also helping UN to achieve its goals of peace, human rights and development.
The observance aims to encourage the full participation of the international community, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals in the pursuit of democracy.
On November 8, 2007 with its resolution A/62/7 UN General Assembly encouraged Governments to strengthen national programs devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy. The resolution also decided that 15 September of each year should be observed as the International Day of Democracy.
Activities and Programs on Day of Democracy
Many programs and events are conducted on the day to spread the importance of democracy and people participation in democratic process. UN encourages the nations to increase the participation of people in all the field that affect them.
In the first International Day of Democracy (15 September 2008), IPU (Inter Parliamentary Union) conducted a special event at the House of Parliaments in Geneva. There are programs and activities related to democracy were organized at national parliaments to highlight the importance and role of parliaments in democracy.
IPU promotes this observation through its member parliaments in 162 countries around the world. Various programs like contests, seminars, online contests, conferences, etc. were conducted on this day to mark its importance. Many people and organizations around the world hold various activities to promote democracy on this day.
Along with a celebration of democracy the day is a reminder that the need to promote and protect democracy is as urgent.
