About United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation

The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is observed as a solution to common development challenges. The south-south cooperation will give sustained economic growth and development especially for developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

By understanding the importance of south-south cooperation United Nations General Assembly decided to declare 19 December as United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation. This was decided by resolution 58/220 on 23 December 2003. This was the date on which the General Assembly endorsed the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries.

Later on, 22 December 2011, the UN General Assembly changed the date of observance to 12 September to mark the day in 1978 when the United Nations Conference on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries adopted the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries.

The UN Day for South-South Cooperation aims to raise people’s awareness of the UN’s efforts to work on technical cooperation among developing countries. This day marks the importance of South-South cooperation to support low-income countries in achieving development goals.


Activities and Programs on United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation

Many programs like meetings, special international seminars and conferences are conducted to increase the South-South cooperation in developing countries. Political leaders from different countries reaffirm their goals and commitment with action plans and press announcements.

Number of institutions and UN organizations took their efforts to mainstream the use of South-South cooperation in designing, formulating, and implementing their regular programs. Relief and rehabilitation projects are been tied up with different programs in south-south cooperation.

Various mass media and channels of communication are used to increase the cooperation. The United Nation also plays its part in increasing the global awareness and also to spread the importance of inclusive development among the nations.

The result of this observation of south-south cooperation is shown as scaling up of South-South flows of trade, investment, technology, know how etc. between different nations as a part of inclusive development.
