About International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

Conflict related sexual violence is any form of sexual violence during conflict time. This includes rape, forced prostitution, sexual slavery, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, forced marriage, etc. Conflict related sexual violence is having an after effect which last for long. Along with poverty, poor health and unwanted pregnancy, the child will also face alienation from their mother and social group. They consider the child as “child of the enemy”.

On 19 June 2015, United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 19 June as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. This day is observed to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence and to express solidarity with survivors of sexual violence in conflict. The date is important as on 19 June 2008, Security Council adopt a resolution in which the council condemned sexual violence as a tactic of war and an impediment to peace-building.


Activities and Programs

There are programs and actions to reintegrate children and women suffered from sexual violence during conflict and war. This includes various discussions and discussions with religious and traditional leaders.

The observation is followed with many campaigns in different media including conversation on social media with hashtags. One of the hashtag used is #EndsRapeinWar.

The 2019 commemoration also marks the 10-year anniversary of the establishment of the mandate and Office of the Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict.
