About International Mountain Day

The year 2002 was the International Year of Mountains. At the close of this year, on December 20, 2002, the United Nations (UN) general Assembly proclaimed to observe December 11 as International Mountain Day with an aim to draw attention to the important roles that mountain regions play in water, energy and food supply. The Day was first observed on 11 December 2003. With this proclamation UN encouraged the international community to organize events at all levels on that day to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development.


Activities and Programs on Mountain Day

Mountain Day is observed with various activities and events. Some events are workshops, seminars, book fairs, press releases, etc. These programs and events are aimed to spread the importance and role of mountains and mountainous regions.
