Career in Electrical Engineering

Introduction to Career in Electrical Engineering

If you are interested in electricity and electronic circuits, electrical engineering is a good choice of career for you. This career offers jobs in wide variety of industries. It is one of the developing branch of engineering which has overlapped in many other engineering branches. Here we discuss about career in electrical engineering.

What is Electrical Engineering?

Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. This field of engineering became common and popular after the invention and commercialization of electrical appliances in the later half of the 19th century.

Electrical engineering is divided into different engineering and also mingled and overlapped between many other engineering disciplines. Electrical engineering has now subdivided into a wide range of subfields including electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, radio-frequency engineering, signal processing, instrumentation, and microelectronics.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Electrical Engineer

Work role of an electrical engineer involves in the fields of generation, allocation, distribution and transmission of electrical power, electrical circuit design, electronics, instrumentation, control systems, electrical and electronic networks etc. They design and develop electrical systems, research new and innovative designs and systems, supervise and plan manufacturing process of high end electrical systems, etc.

Educational Qualification Required

The basic qualification required to become an electrical engineer is to get a bachelor degree in engineering or technology (B.E / B. Tech) in electrical. Diploma courses are also available in the fields of electrical engineering.

There are many specializations and courses are available in the field of electrical engineering. These courses gives much improved opportunity for the job seeker in this field on specific industries.

One can go for master’s degree in electrical engineering and get a better job opportunity and also for opting a teaching profession. They can also go for research and P.hd. in this field and specialization.

For getting admission for engineering course a student has to get good score in entrance exams conducted by IITs or national level or state level entrance exams or exams conducted by various engineering colleges. The basic qualification required to write these entrance exams are 10+2 science or equivalent examination, with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) as the optional subject. A person can get admission into master’s degree (M. Tech) by getting good score in entrance examinations like GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The basic qualification to attempt GATE is B Tech or BE.

Skills and Knowledge Required for Career in Electrical Engineering

The skills and knowledge required are also wide as an electrical engineer has to work in wide area of industry. Along with good knowledge in electrical engineering an electrical engineer should possess skills like problem identification, problem solving, communication skills, presentation skills, analytical skills, practical minds, adaptable to new technologies and developments, etc.

How to become an Electrical Engineer?

If anybody want to become an electrical engineer, he / she must choose PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) stream in 10+2 science and score good in Entrance exams conducted by IITs or in national or state level entrance exams or in entrance exams conducted by individual colleges for admission into engineering colleges.

Working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders can acquire a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering by appearing for the Associate Membership examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE).

Where do I get the Job?

Electrical engineers work in wide range of industries as computers and most of the machines work with electricity. So the career options are available in almost every industry.

An electrical engineer can get job in electricity generating stations, electricity distribution systems, telecommunications, radar, computer fields, etc. The said job can be available in government, semi government, private industries, telecommunication industry, power industry, railways, defense sector, etc.
