About International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members
Every year March 25 is observed as the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members. It is the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett, a former journalist who was working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Observation of the day is important as many of the UN personnel are kidnapped while working for UN or engaged in relief works. Many UN personnel are still facing threats to their freedom and security.
Observation of the day aims to mobilize action, demand justice and strengthen United Nations resolve to protect the UN staff and peacekeepers. It also aims to support and protect staff from the non-governmental community and the press.
Activities and Programs on the Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members
United Nations promotes the Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members to encourage governments to do more in their power to protect UN personnel in their jobs. Many activities are conducted on this day to remember UN personnel who have abducted whilst doing their job. It is also a day to remember missing journals and personnel work for United Nations Relief and other works.
Programs and actions on this day urges nations to take necessary actions to protect UN staff and peacekeepers as well as their colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press.
