About Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide
Every Year April 7 is observed as Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide. Another name of the day is International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda. The observance aims to remember the victims of Genocide in Rwanda which started on April 7, 1994.
United nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 23 December 2003 designating April 7 as the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda.
Genocide in Rwanda took place during the Rwandan Civil War which lasted for approximately three months. An estimate of 5 to 10 lakh people were killed in this genocide.
One aim of the observation is to prevent similar acts in the future.
Activities and Programs on International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda
Special events or programs are conducting at some areas of the world to remember the Genocide in Rwanda started on April 7, 1994.
On this day UN member states are observing one minute of silence in memory of the victims. There are other programs like candle lighting, one minute silence observance, testimony sharing of Rwanda Genocide victims, poetry presentations, arts presentations and exhibitions, etc.
The program conducted on this day aims to prevent similar acts in the future, raising awareness about the genocide and lasting impact of genocide on the survivors and the challenges that they still face today.
