About International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action
Every year April 4 is observed as International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. On December 8, 2005 United Nations General Assembly proclaimed to observe this day every year on 4 April and the first observance was made on April 4, 2006. The observance of the day aims to raise awareness about land mines and encourage governments to develop mine clearing programs.
This day provides an opportunity for the world to reflect on both the progress made and the challenges remaining in clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance which still endanger civilians. The day is important as these mines left over after war put innocent people, including many children at risk.
