About International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

On December 2, 1977 United Nations General Assembly called for the annual observance of November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The date of 29 November was chosen because on that day in 1947, the General Assembly adopt the resolution on the partition of Palestine (Resolution 181 (II). In 2003, the day was observed on December 1.

The resolution of partition of Palestine recommended withdrawal of armed forces from Palestine and the creation of independent Arab and Jewish states. The resolution also suggests special International Regime for the City of Jerusalem and that the City of Jerusalem should preserve the interests of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths. This plan was not fully implemented.

The United Nations describes the day as below:

“an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remained unresolved and that the Palestinian people are yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property from which they had been displaced.”
