About World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)
Every year June 15 is observed as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This day is observed to focus global attention on the problem of physical, emotional, and financial abuse of elders.
On June 15, 2006, International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) and the UN’s World Health Organization launched WEAAD. UN General Assembly passed a resolution on March 9, 2012 to observe June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). The first WEAAD was observed in the year 2012.
Activities and Programs on WEAAD
Programs and activities are conducted around the world to mark this day. The programs include meetings and conferences at the UN headquarters. Other programs includes going purple on WEAAD day, providing free WEAAD bookmarks in libraries, etc.
