About World Blood Donor Day

Every year June 14 is observed as World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). This day is observed to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood. The date is the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner (birth date 14 June 1868) who won the Nobel Prize for his great discovery of the ABO blood group system.

The observation of the day was first initiated and celebrated by “the Word Health organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies” in the year 2004. The goal of WHO is by 2020 all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors.
