Introduction to Career in Industrial Engineering
Industrial Engineering also called production engineering or operations Management or Manufacturing Engineering or different names depending upon the work and viewer. It is a branch of engineering that applied in virtually to every industry. Here we discuss about career in Industrial Engineering.
What is Industrial Engineering?
Industrial Engineering deals with development, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, knowledge, equipment, energy, material and process. The term industrial engineering originally apply to manufacturing, but it has extended its arm now to different related fields like operations research, system engineering, quality engineering etc.
Roles and Responsibilities of an Industrial Engineer
The work role associated with industrial engineer are different according to the industry he or she is working. The jobs are like developing methods and modeling or planning like shortening the queue, distributing products worldwide, manufacture of more cheaper and reliable products, etc. The main work role of an industrial engineer is to manage people, material, energy, information and machines in a more efficient ways.
Educational Qualification Required
To become an industrial engineer one has to obtain a bachelor’s degree (B.E.) in production or industrial engineering. Industrial engineering is also taught as a special subject after BE in mechanical or electrical engineering. A post graduate degree (M. E / M. Tech) is an added qualification.
Skills and Knowledge Required for Career in Industrial Engineering
A person want to become an industrial engineer should be creative and have ability to manage and guide a team. He / she must have good knowledge in the process of production and methods. Along with this they must have different skills like analytical, problem solving, good communication both in writing and speaking, presentation, computer application, etc.
How to become an Industrial Engineer?
To become an industrial engineer one has to opt for science stream with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) in 10 + 2 or equivalent examination. After that he / she has to get bachelor’s degree and further go for a post graduate degree and Ph. D in industrial or production engineering. Admission to B. E / B. tech or M. E / M. Tech are through different entrance exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, GATE, etc. conducted by different organizations or engineering colleges.
Where do I get the Job?
The job is available for an industrial engineer in almost all type of industries. Public, private companies, research and development establishments, consultancies, engineering and manufacturing units, etc. provides career opportunities for an industrial engineer. Self-employment is a good option to someone who have good contacts and ability.
Research and development sector offers a wide scope for these engineers. They work in different research labs of industries includes, transportation, banking, pharmaceuticals, finance, sports, etc.
