Career in Mechanical Engineering

Introduction to Career in Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is one of the most demanded engineering branch in past, present and will be in future. This is because, it is directly deals with industry for making and maintenance of equipment for its functioning. Mechanical engineering is a requirement for all industries which requires equipment or machines. Here we discuss more about career in mechanical engineering.

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is an engineering branch deals with the design, development, construction, production, installation, operation and maintenance of tools, machines, equipment used in industries.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Mechanical Engineer

Role and responsibilities of a mechanical engineer varies with industry he / she is working. Generally the roles and responsibilities includes designing, development, construction, production, installation, and maintenance of machines and tools used in the industry.

Mechanical engineer is an unavoidable part in the functioning of a manufacturing business industry. They take care of production and maintenance of the machineries. They make sure that the plant has been running for the optimal time to get desired output.

Educational Qualification Required for Career in Mechanical Engineering

An engineering degree (BE / BTech) in mechanical engineering or a diploma in mechanical engineering is the basic requirement for becoming a mechanical engineer. Many institutions like IITs are offering such courses. One can also go for postgraduate courses in mechanical engineering at engineering colleges and IITs. This will help to get into good career and high career growth opportunities.

For getting admission for engineering course a student has to get good score in entrance exams conducted by IITs or national level or state level entrance exams or exams conducted by various engineering colleges. Only a good score can give you an opportunity to study this course in desired college. The basic qualification required to write these entrance exams are 10+2 science or equivalent examination, with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) as the optional subject.

Skills and Knowledge Required for Career in Mechanical Engineering

A mechanical engineer should have variety of skills and knowledge to become successful in his / her career. He should be excellent in mechanical engineering, good in drawing and designing, possess good analytical skills, very well knowledge in computer and IT, numerical and mathematical precision, creativity and speedy understanding of problems, ability to handle difficult situations, etc. The ability to keep calm under pressure and flexibility to work in a multi-disciplinary area are also needed. Good communication and presentation skills will also give advantage in this field of engineering.

The job atmosphere is mostly in teams. A person with ability to work in teams can be a good mechanical engineer. Along with that they also need to work close with other professionals like finance, human resource, marketing, sales and service, etc. Along with this they should also have good knowledge in construction, structures, electrical, computer, physics, drawing, etc.

How to become a Mechanical Engineer?

A student want to become a mechanical engineer must choose PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) stream in 10+2 science. Also they have to score good in Entrance exams conducted by IITs or in national or state level entrance exams. Some individual colleges or institutions are also conducting entrance exams for admission into engineering colleges. After BTech in Mechanical Engineering, one can opt for MTech by writing GATE exam.

Working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders can acquire a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering by appearing for the Associate Membership examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE). This method gives an opportunity to those having degree in electronics or mathematics or physics to enter into this career field.

Where do I get the Job?

Mechanical Engineering have prominent and important place in many industries including private and public sector. So the scope and employment potential for mechanical engineering field is very much. One can get job in industries as mechanical engineer, designer of machines, maintenance and service operator, etc.
