About International Day of Charity
On December 17, 2012 the General Assembly of the United Nations in its resolution A/RES/67/105 designated the 5th of September, the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, as the International Day of Charity. First International Day of Charity was celebrated in the year 2013.
Poverty is a world problem which affects millions of people particularly in developing countries. Charity helps us to reach out these marginalized and underprivileged millions of people. It helps in advancement of these people in different levels like health care, education, housing, child protection etc.
Mother Teresa was a nun and missionary devoted herself to helping the destitute. She founded the order of Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata in 1950. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace”.
Charity is the act of giving, typically of money and / or time, to help those who are in need especially marginalized and underprivileged people.
Activities and Programs on International Day of Charity
Events and activities are conducting on this day to encourage charity. United Nations member states, international and regional organizations, civil society, non-governmental organizations and individuals do many programs include education and public awareness programs to encourage charity.
Events and programmes are arranged to promote charitable efforts made to alleviate poverty worldwide. Fundraising and educational events are held worldwide on this day.
The message is spread with social sites and networks, news through TV, online sites, radios, printed materials etc. It encourages people to do charity to the needed by different means.
This day gives an opportunity to many organizations to promote their own projects and encourage charitable activities in their communities. Many organizations establish symbolic awards in community for individuals and/or organizations who lead by example when it comes to charity, philanthropy, or volunteerism.
