What is National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination?

National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (Commonly known as NDA Examination) is an all India examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission for admission to Army, Navy and Air Force wings of National Defence Academy (NDA) and for Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC). The exam is conducting twice in a year.

This exam is sometimes called as NDA & NA examination I and II which gives opportunity to get into Army, Navy and Air Force.


Availability of Vacancies

A provisional list of vacancies at National Defence Academy and Naval Academy [10 + 2 Cadet Entry Scheme] will be given at the time of notification. Vacancies will be available in Army, Navy and Air Force at National Defence Academy (NDA).


When is the Exam Conducted?

The exams are conducted twice in a year NDA I and NDA II. Exam dates are mostly coming in the month of April – May (for MDA I) and October – November (for NDA II) months. Tentative dates for NDA examinations are given below. The dates are based on exam dates of NDA 2019.

Eligibility for National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination

(a) Nationality

A candidate must be either be:

i. A citizen of India, or

ii. A subject of Bhutan, or

iii. A subject of Nepal, or

iv. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before the 1stJanuary, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

v. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, malwi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.


(b) Age limits, Sex and Marital Status:

A candidate must be an unmarried male. The age limits is between 16 and 19.

For Example, age limit for NDA & NA 2019 (I) exam conducting on 21 April 2019 is born not earlier than 2nd July 2000 and not later than 1st July 2003.


(c) Educational Qualifications:

(i) For Army wing of National Defence academy: 12th class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

(ii) For Air force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 (Executive Branch) Course at the Naval Academy: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply.


(d) Physical Standards

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to National Defence Academy and naval Academy Examination as per guidelines.

A candidate recommended by the Service Selection Board (SSB) will undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers. Only those candidates will be admitted to the academy who are declared fit by the Medical Board.

(i) The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease/ disability which is likely in interfere with the efficient performance of military duties.

(ii) There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects or underweight. The candidate should not be overweight or obese.

(iii) The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cm (162.5 cm for Air Force)

Application Fee:

Candidates (other than exempted from payment of fees) are required pay specified amount as exam fees at the time of enrollment. Exam fees for NDA 2019 (I) was Rs. 100.

SC/ST candidates, Sons of JCOs, NCOs & Ors are exempted from the payment of application fee.

Exam fees can be submitted by debit/credit card and SBI net banking or through challan of SBI bank.
